Versus

by treeCoder 2023. 8. 27.

Man should be ashamed. Would have respected him a lot more if he was just honest in his response and owned up to it versus incoherent rambling.

The above sentences have easy words except “incoherent”, but I don’t understand the meaning. Because of subtle nuance and the use of “would”. Can you explain to non native speakers of English?

Certainly. The passage you provided is sharing an opinion about a man's behavior; it seems critical of how the man has responded to a particular situation. Let's break it down:

1. "Man should be ashamed." The speaker is expressing that a man should feel remorse or embarrassment for something he has done.

2. "Would have respected him a lot more if he was just honest in his response and owned up to it." Here, "would have respected" is a conditional statement. It implies that there was a chance for the man to earn more respect from the speaker, but it was conditional on the man being honest and taking responsibility for his actions ("owned up to it"). Unfortunately, as implied by this sentence, the man did not do so.

3. "Versus incoherent rambling." The word "versus" is being used to compare two situations. It contrasts the situation of the man being honest with another situation where he responds with "incoherent rambling". "Incoherent" means unclear or not logical, and "rambling" refers to talking for a long time in an aimless, confused, or meaningless way. So "incoherent rambling" means the man was speaking in a way that was hard to understand or lacked clear purpose or meaning.

In essence, the speaker is saying: "The man should feel shame. If he had been honest and taken responsibility, I would have respected him more. His actual response, however, was unclear and aimless."
